Business Planning: Purpose of Wealth

Business Planning: Purpose of Wealth

Author: Brandon Jordan, CFP®, CHFC®, CEPA®, CVGA®, CLU®, MSA | CEO of Impact Advisors Group

Last week, my wife and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary by taking a short overnight trip. Like many couples with children, youth sports, businesses, careers, responsibilities, and calendars that somehow fill themselves, simply getting away together felt like a gift.

During our time together, our conversations were NOT centered around investments, businesses, and financial planning. Instead, we found ourselves talking about something much more valuable.

Time

We reflected on how incredibly blessed we are — not simply because of what we’ve been able to accumulate/achieve, but because of the time we’ve been able to spend together.

  • Time with each other.
  • Time with our children.
  • Time with family.
  • Time with friends.
  • Time serving our community.

It became VERY obvious to me…….

Money is one of our greatest resources. BUT time is our most valuable asset.

Unlike money…

  • Time cannot be earned back.
  • Time cannot be invested for a higher return.
  • Time cannot be refinanced.
  • Time cannot be borrowed.

Every one of us receives the same twenty-four hours each day. The question isn’t whether we’ll spend it. The question is whether we’ll spend it intentionally.

We want our clients to understand this tension better than anyone.

The same drive that builds successful companies can quietly consume the very life those companies were intended to support. I’ve met countless owners who could tell me how successful their business is.  Far fewer can confidently answer another question:

“Do you have enough margin in your life to enjoy the people you’re building it for?”

That’s a much harder question. One of my favorite quotes comes from author Annie Dillard:

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”

Financial planning isn’t simply about maximizing returns. It’s about aligning resources with priorities.  It’s about creating enough flexibility that you can say…

  • Yes to the anniversary trip.
  • Yes to coaching your son’s little league team.
  • Yes to your daughter’s recital or horse show.
  • Yes to dinner with friends.
  • Yes to helping someone in need.
  • Yes to serving your church.
  • Yes to taking your grandchildren fishing someday.

Ironically, this is one reason we spend so much time talking with clients about liquidity, diversification, and intentional planning. Those conversations aren’t just about improving a balance sheet. They’re about creating options. Optionality creates freedom. Freedom creates margin.

The greatest gift wealth can provide isn’t necessarily a larger home, a nicer car, or another successful investment. It’s the ability to choose how we spend our time. To me, that’s what financial independence really means. Not simply having enough money to stop working, but having enough freedom to invest your life in what matters most.

As I look back on twenty wonderful years of marriage, I’m reminded that the memories we treasure most weren’t our biggest financial wins. They were the moments we were fully present with the people we love. That’s a return no market can measure.

If this season has you wondering whether your financial life is creating more freedom—or simply more obligations—I would love to have that conversation.

At the end of the day, our goal isn’t simply to help clients build wealth. Our mission is to help them build a life they’re grateful they didn’t miss.

Time is the only asset that most people are willing to spend unintentionally without knowing its remaining balance. We refuse to let our clients become “most people.”

The purpose of wealth isn’t simply to increase our standard of living. It’s to increase our capacity to live an IMPACTful life.
